چکیده

I estimate MOND M/L values for nine galaxy groups that were recently studied by Tully et al.. Instead of the large M/L values that they find with Newtonian dynamics (up to 1200 solar units) the MOND estimates fall around 1 solar unit. Tully et al. find a systematic and significant difference between the M/L values of groups that do not contain luminous galaxies and those that do: Dwarfs-only groups have larger M/L values (by a factor of ∼ 5). The MOND M/L values do not show this trend; the Newtonian disparity is traced back to the dwarfs-only groups having systematically smaller intrinsic accelerations (similar sizes, but rather smaller velocity dispersions).

The recent findings of Romanowsky et al., of an “unexpectedly” small mass discrepancy within 5 effective radii in several elliptical galaxies, are not surprising in the context of MOND. As we show here, they are, in fact, in full concordance with its predictions. One is dealing with high-surface-density galaxies with mean accelerations rather larger than the acceleration constant of MOND. These...

Using high-dispersion spectra from the HIRES echelle spectrograph on the Keck I telescope, we measure velocity dispersions for 4 globular clusters in M33. Combining the velocity dispersions with integrated photometry and structural parameters derived from King–Michie model fits to WFPC2 images, we obtain mass-to-light ratios for the clusters. The mean value is M/LV = 1.53 ± 0.18, very similar t...

The physical bases of the detection and characterisation of extrasolar planets in the reflected light and thermal emission regimes are reviewed. They both have their advantages and disadvantages, including artefacts, in the determination of planet physical parameters (mass, size, albedo, surface and atmospheric conditions etc. A special attention is paid for Earth-like planets and new perspecti...

The 2 Ms Chandra Deep Field-North survey provides the deepest view of the Universe in the 0.5–8.0 keV X-ray band. In this brief review we investigate the diversity of X-ray selected sources and focus on the constraints placed on AGNs (including binary AGNs) in high-redshift submm galaxies.
